The first thing I noticed was the tires: big tires with a tread that looked like what I would expect to find on bikes ready to drop in at the Venice Beach Skate Park. But that impression changed as soon as I laid eyes on the bike in person. The Beasley isn’t flashy, and most likely when you saw photos you shrugged your shoulders. And the stack height is considerably more aggressive, at 613mm (29mm lower than the Beasley). Reach on the Giant is 423mm, which is 5mm shorter than the Beasley. Giant’s Escape 2 Disc City also offers a good comparison to the Beasley. Stack height on the Beasley, however, is 14mm taller, at 642mm. Reach on the Beasley runs a tad shorter than the Raleigh, 428mm to 433mm respectively.

The Beasley 27.5 bears a lot of resemblance, both visually and on paper, to the Raleigh Redux 2, which isn’t surprising as the Raleigh is also touted as a rough-and-tumble urban commuter. Short, Tall, and Inspires a Feeling of Control and Stability It’s not until the top of the block, where you go from a 26t cog up to a 34t cog, that you will feel a big jump as you hit the bailout gear. Despite the wide range of the cassette, the bulk of the block makes only moderate jumps, so the gap between gears isn’t too dramatic. However, commuters in hilly cities may want something a little smaller. You can get rolling pretty fast with a 40x11, and the 40x34 is a decent bailout gear for most moderate climbs. The 11-34 cassette, paired with a 40t chainring, gives riders a wide range of gears on both ends of the spectrum. With an eye toward affordability, as well as reliability, the Beasley 27.5 is outfitted with a 1x8-speed drivetrain, using the combination of a Shimano Acera rear derailleur and Shimano Altus shifter. Just like our cars, we want them ready for action, on-demand, without spending a lot of time, money, and energy maintaining them. Dependable Components That Don’t Add Unnecessary CostĬommuter bikes bikes get used hard. All-aluminum Wellgo platform pedals have small nubs that keep rubber-soled shoes from slipping. The Haro MTB grips are really comfortable as well, more comfortable than any other OEM grips I’ve come across. Promax mechanical disc brakes offer plenty of control and stopping power for both playing in traffic and playing at the park.Īlong with tires that are ready to play, the 700mm wide (on my XL test bike) Pivit MTB bar, with a 25mm rise, makes the bike feel more sporty than you might expect from an urban commuter. An 11-34 cassette, paired with a 40t single chainring, offers plenty of go-fast gearing, and the 40x34 gives you a decent bailout gear for getting up some hills. The drivetrain comes courtesy of a Shimano Acera 8-speed derailleur and Altus shifter. The wide handlebar, more reminiscent of what you’d find on a mountain bike, is a fun addition and adds to the Beasley’s playful nature. Wide, 2-inch Kenda Kwick Seven.5 Sport tires wrapped around 27.5-inch, 32-spoke wheels are fast on pavement, grippy enough to get sendy at the bike park, and have enough tread to be passable when the pavement ends. The Beasley 27.5 is the bike your 10-year-old self would want you to have. Something We Don't: Some riders may find the 40 chainring a little big for hillier terrain. What We Love: Fat, grippy tires roll fast on pavement and are still good when the pavement ends.Who Should Buy This: Riders who want a playful commuter bike that can handle playing hard on the weekend.Want to know more about Hero Xtreme 200s variants or want to find out about its price & specification or maybe you want to locate Hero MotoCorp Showrooms for a riding experience?
